My chair has evolved over the years. I’ve always had a special chair that I sit in. No matter where I have lived or what the chair looks like, I have a place that I sit in daily. Most often this place is a place where I sit and pray, think about the day and get ready for what lies ahead.
In Kentucky, it was an oversized dark leather seat. I would turn on the overhead lamp early in the morning before all the other alarms sounded. It was a special place. I prayed a lot there. I even cried there. I learned a lot there. I wrote there. I made decisions there. I even napped there after long days of teaching.
In North Carolina, I would often sit outside on our back porch. The chair and location changed but the reason for sitting there didn’t. I would read, reflect, pray, laugh, watch the deer walk across the golf course.
In Colorado, you can find me in the corner of the living room most early mornings sitting in a patterned chair which used to take up space in our bedroom. I sit in the chair beside the window facing our neighbors’ house. I think, read, write, study, pray and ponder in this seat.
I always sit in my spot, my chair, before beginning the day. Sometimes it’s only ten minutes. Sometimes I sit for an hour. It is special, it is a place of reflection, remembering, of peace and quiet before all the world and it’s chaos seeps in.
That is a beauty of an upholstered chair and a beauty of a spot (two corner windows). I love the way you describe your morning ritual: “I think, read, write, study, pray and ponder in this seat.”

Your chair/s sounds lovely! What a wonderful practice to have that piece of solitude in the morning. Now you have me thinking about waking up a little earlier each morning and finding a special spot where I can pray and think and ponder.

I *need* a chair like that!
I’ve never had one. If anyone were to ask me what my chair is, I’d probably defer to my desk chair. That’s kind of sad.
Runner-up would be my makeup ottoman, but that’s backless and not that comfy.
Enjoy relaxing in your chair again and again and again.

Everyone “needs” a daily sit-wherever that may be. Thanks so much for reading!

The chair is so beautiful and looks so cozy! I could glimpse you in each place you mention, living your moments in chairs, by windows – so meditative, especially with the writing, prayer, watching the deer – and oh, the tears…which are healing, in their way. Seems like your chair(s) know many chapters of your story. 🙂

I like the structure of this piece, how the evolution of place and chair tell the tale of your consistency.

I was just thinking about it how this has been a constant over the years, even in change. It’s been good for me to hold onto these small rituals in the midst of change.

Thank you for reading. I love the spot. The windowsill is large enough to hold my morning coffee too. ☕️

I also have a chair that I begin and end each day in. In this house, it looks out the front window where I can see the world passing by.

There’s such power in ritual and you’ve found and expressed a beautiful one with this chair. Such a centering time for you. What a lovely slice.

Annalee, you have described something I can totally relate to. I also have a chair (actually the L shaped part of the sectional) where I start everyday in much the same way you do. Two cups of coffee worth of reading and journaling scripture, reading poetry, writing, and planning for the day. It is my favorite time of the day! What a difference it makes to get grounded before “the chaos seeps in.”

That looks awfully cozy. Chairs for me need what my husband and I refer to as “snoozability.” If it’s one that we could doze off in while reading or writing, that’s the one!

I understand snoozability. This one has ponderability.
